Evan Flory-Barnes’ The Teaching
$14 general

Paul HardingContinuing this year's Langston Hughes collaboration, spoken-word artist Paul Harding pursues truth with an arresting posse of Seattle jazzers that includes saxophonist Eric Barber, multireedman Hans Teuber, pianist Stephen Fandrich, bassist Geoff Harper, trumpeter Gabriel C. Herbertson, and percussionist Mark Ostrowski.

They describe their sound as a "mix of free motown, post-hardbop, snakeskin Miles Davis, cubic country, and versified funk while infamous spoken music poet Paul Harding mobilizes his MiddleVoice of song history and storytelling. We call it free hop."

Evan Flory-BarnesFast-rising bassist Evan Flory-Barnes opens with The Teaching, a band that injects the Socratic into the post-jazz flow. Flory-Barnes is a young dynamo on the local scene, the go-to bassist of a vast array of leaders. Experienced in symphonic, jazz, and solo bass performance, along with several other styles, he also leads his own indefinable group, Threat of Beauty, and now this similarly expansive small combo with two other tyros on a tear: Josh Rawlings on piano and Jeremy Jones on drums. Their music is uplifting, joyful, and passionate.
