Four AcrossOne of the most promising jazz quartets now on the scene, Four Across makes its Earshot Jazz Festival debut presenting forward-thinking, sensitive jazz that blends folk melody, South American grooves, and New Orleans spirit. With Carmen Staaf on piano, Josh Deutsch on trumpet/flugelhorn, Matt Aronoff on bass, and Brian Adler on drums, this collection of New England Conservatory graduates, many with Seattle ties, released its first album, Four Across, earlier this year and is fresh off an east coast tour.

Pianist, accordionist, composer, educator, and Seattle-native Carmen Staaf won the 2004 IAJE Sisters in Jazz Competition which led to a performance at the Kennedy Center as part of the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. She has also performed at the Festa do Jazz do Teatro Sao Luiz in Lisbon, the Panama Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and at the Concurso de Jovenes Jazzistas (Young Jazz Musicians Contest) in Havana, Cuba. In addition to her work with Four Across, Staff co-leads the Staaf Quartet and performs with the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra. She is currently on the faculty at the Berklee College of Music.

Trumpeter, composer, and fellow Seattleite, Josh Deutsch performs in a variety of musical settings, including the Josh Deutsch Quinet and Poisonous Birds, a quintet that  specializes in jazz/rock/funk fusion. While at NEC he studied with Danilo Perez, Bob Brookmeyer, John McNeil, Allan Chase, and Lee Hyla, and he is currently pursuing a master's degree in jazz performance and composition at the University of Oregon. Josh was named winner of the College Jazz Soloist award in Downbeat Magazine's 2008 Student Music Awards.

Matt Aronoff, originally from New Jersey, has established himself as a versatile and in demand bass player on the New York scene.  After completing a bachelors degree in classical bass at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Matt went on to earn a Masters at the Manhattan School of Music.  In addition to numerous jazz projects, Matt has worked on Broadway and toured internationally with singer Luciana Souza.

New York-based drummer Brian Adler is known for his delicate, sparse, and earthy sound and his creative compositional style that incorporates ancient texts. Well versed in jazz, folk, and music of the avant-garde and India, Adler has performed with Ran Blake, Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynski, Erik Lawrence, Kate McGarry, Stomu Takeishi, and Ray Vega. Adler is the backbone of the Prana Trio and is the founder of Circavision Productions, a record label, publishing house, and production company.
