Largely known for his contributions to the ensembles of Chet Baker, Cannonball Adderly, and Phil Woods, pianist Hal Galper possesses the knowledge and mastery of his instrument that only a lifetime of dedication may bring. As on the outstanding Origin release Furious Rubato, Galper here teams with drummer John Bishop and bassist Jeff Johnson. The album, which JazzTimes noted “contained the most complex, daring, exhilarating music of Galper’s career,” pushes jazz into bold new directions. With Johnson and Bishop, Galper explores standards, originals, and group improvisations utilizing original approaches to rubato, an open and circular approach to time and melody that Galper has explored and developed over the last several years.
