Hans Koch
Paul Kikuchi’s Portable Sanctuary

Chapel Performance Space, 8, $15 BUY ONLINE

Swiss reedman Hans Koch, one of the most fearless improvisers in music, performs solo on bass clarinet. Koch left his career as a classical clarinetist and has worked since with Fred Frith, Cecil Taylor, and Andrew Cyrille. He’s scored radio plays and films and is also known to extend explorations of his own musical sound on electronics in addition to reeds.

Paul Kikuchi follows with his quartet – trombone maestro Stuart Dempster and fellow percussionist-instrument makers Alexander Vittum and Jesse Olsen. Kikuchi is an enterprising Seattle-based percussionist and composer. He’s involved in building a catalog of experimental musicians on the new Prefecture Records, based in Seattle. He’s also a certified practitioner of Feldenkrais, a type of body movement therapy aimed at increasing the integration of mind and body and reducing injury, which figures in his teaching drums. Kikuchi attended the California Institute of the Arts where he studied with Milford Graves, Wadada Leo Smith, and Vinny Golia.
