Roosevelt High School Jazz Band
with Sean Jones

$22 general/$11 youth

Sean JonesA rising star, trumpeter Sean Jones has revealed himself to be an extremely expressive, versatile, and gifted player of his generation. His style reflects Clifford Brown for its technical facility, Freddie Hubbard for its flowing, lyrical lines, Woody Shaw for its harmonic approach, and Miles Davis for its pursuit of innovative, forward-thinking ideas.

Just 30 years old, Jones is the lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and a professor of jazz studies at Duquesne University. In 2007, he received a nomination from Down Beat's Critics Poll in the rising star category as well as nominations from the Jazz Times' Readers Poll and Jazz Journalistic Association for their best new artist categories.

He has recorded four albums as a leader, including Gemini (2005) and Kaleidoscope (2007). Along the way he has worked with many of the biggest names in jazz, such as Gerald Wilson, Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Jon Faddis, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Steve Turre, Ivan Lins, and Nancy Wilson, appearing on her Grammy award-winning album Turned to Blue (2006).

Roosevelt High School Jazz BandTonight Jones kicks off the 2008 Earshot Jazz Festival backed by the award-winning Roosevelt High School Jazz Ensemble. Under the 22-year leadership of Scott Brown, the big band remains one of the best of its kind in the country. This year, for the second year in a row and third time overall, the band won top honors at the Essentially Ellington competition.
