Who Do You Love? – The 7th Annual Columbia City Blues Festival
The Columbia City Blues Festival is a curated, historically informed festival celebrating one of America’s greatest original art forms. Each year celebrates an iconic figure in the history of American blues. “and the Blues” is an annual celebration of three artists not identified as blues artist but with deep roots in blues music.
Who Do You Love: Bo Diddley and the shape of the blues to come.
“and the Blues”: John Coltrane; Hank Williams; Patti Smith
Bo Diddley played a key role in the transition from the blues to rock and roll. He influenced many artists, including Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones, and the Clash. His use of African rhythms and a signature beat is a cornerstone of all kinds of music. His trademark otherworldly, vibrating, fuzzy guitar style did much to expand the instrument’s power and range.
John Coltrane was perhaps the most iconic musician in jazz in the late 20th century. As a jazz saxophonist and composer, he worked in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk.
Hank Williams’ words and music echo across the decades with a timelessness that transcends genre. He brought country music into the modern era, and his influence spilled over into the folk and rock arenas as well.
Patti Smith ranks among the most influential female rock & rollers of all time. One of the pioneers of punk rock music, a trailblazer who redefined the role of female rock stars, a poet who released her lyrical talent over powerful guitars, Patti Smith stands out as one of the great figures in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.
