Hiromi Uehara has electrified audiences and critics east and west, with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop parameters, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Born in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan Hiromi Uehara (professionally know as Hiromi), started playing the piano at the age of 6 and at the same time studied composition at the Yamaha Music School. Her first teacher, Noriko Hikida, encouraged her to access both the intuitive and technical aspects of music, introducing the concept of color to her approach to the piano. Hikida also exposed Hiromi to jazz and introduced her to the great pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. From that point on Hiromi has continued on a meteoric rise.
At 17, Hiromi performed with Chick Corea. With her jazz career well and truly off to a resounding start, Hiromi attended the Berklee College of Music. While still a student, she signed with record label Tellarc and released her debut album, Another Mind in 2003. In 2011, she won the “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” at the 53rd Grammy Awards for her project with Stanley Clarke, The Stanley Clarke Band Featuring Hiromi Uehara. In 2013 DownBeat magazine’s 61st Annual International Critics Poll, she was included in the Jazz Artist, Piano, Keyboard and Rising Star: Piano categories. In her latest album, Silver Lining Suite (Tellarc 2021), Hiromi further exemplifies her virtuosic hybridity and emotional range. Not one to slow down, Hiromi will continue “dazzling audiences with speed and power and complexity,” (NYT) for some time to come. Her latest album Sonicwonderland will be out on October 6.
Hiromi’s ensemble will include Adam O’Farrill (trumpet), Hadrien Feraud (bass), and Gene Coye (drums).
