KNKX presents: Piano Starts Here, Chicago in the 20s – National Jazz Melting Pot
After its birth and childhood in New Orleans, jazz spent its adolescence and early adulthood in Chicago before moving to New York. The windy city was home to too many greats of early Jazz to list here; some of the pianists among them – Earl Hines, Jelly Roll Morton, Jess Stacy, Joe Sullivan and many more, were among the best to ever play the instrument. Native son Ray Skjelbred will surely be a fine guide through this musical journey.
Featuring: Alex Guilbert, Ray Skjelbred and Jacob Zimmerman.
The Piano Starts Here series highlights the work of some of the most prolific and talented composers and pianists to have ever tackled the instrument. Each of the performances brings together Seattle’s finest pianists to perform the works of the artist selected for that evening on the Royal Room’s Steinway B grand piano.
