Piano Starts Here: In Memoriam (Two generations of the avant-garde)
The Music of Geri Allen/Muhal Richard Abrams
The Piano Starts Here series highlights the work of some of the most prolific and talented composers and pianists to have ever tackled the instrument. Each of the performances brings together Seattle’s finest pianists to perform the works of the artist selected for that evening on the Royal Room’s Steinway B grand piano.
We lost two giants of modern pianism in 2017.
Muhal Richard Abrams, perhaps best known as the grandfather of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), mentor to The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis and the generation that followed. Muhal’s vision of creativity was widely diverse, and he supported and nurtured young musicians from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds. His influence was broad and profound.
Geri Allen’s music was deep and wide- she was an elegant pianist, an early collaborator with Brooklyn’s “M-Base”, and a fine composer who we lost far too early. She was the first woman and youngest person to receive the Danish Jazzpar Prize, and was the first recipient of the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Jazz. Allen contributed some of the most groundbreaking and forward thinking music of the time. The remarkable pianist leaves behind a wealth of material that will educate future generations of musicians. She was a cutting edge performing artist, and continued to entertain internationally up until her death

Alex Guilbert, host of the Piano Starts Here series, has been playing and composing music professionally as part of the Seattle scene for more than 20 years. Although he’s got a firm grounding in the jazz tradition, he’s been a side man and leader in ensembles of many different styles. From traditional jazz and rock to electronica and classical, Alex’s appreciation for a range of musical genres continues to inform and inspire his work.
