Racer Sessions: Carmen Rothwell (NYC)
July 21 @ 8:00 pm
Carmen Rothwell, bassist, is an active voice in the jazz and improvised music scene, with home bases in Seattle and New York City. A graduate of the University of Washington’s Jazz Studies program, she is known especially for her great sound and versatility. She has had the opportunity to perform with many notable artists including Billy Hart, Bill Frisell, Cuong Vu, Dave Douglas, George Garzone, Ted Poor, Wayne Horvitz, Pete Rende, Wally Shoup, Greg Sinibaldi, Taylor Ho Bynum, Marc Seales, Thomas Marriott, Miguel Zenon, and Wycliffe Gordon.
Every Sunday the Racer Sessions feature a different artist or group who perform original music and provide a short explanation of their creative process. Afterwards, a jam session takes place, often based on the concepts and approaches outlined in the opening presentation.
The Racer Sessions’ musical focus is primarily centered on improvisation—particularly free or collective improv—and frequently incorporates the aesthetic and techniques of avant-gard jazz and classical music. However, we firmly believe that, as the name suggests, free improvisation should not be limited to any particular style, creed or approach, and we warmly welcome musicians of any persuasion to share their voice.
