Described as “a state-of-the-art musical thinker” (NYT) alto saxophonist Steve Lehman is a composer, performer, educator, and scholar who works across a broad spectrum of experimental musical idioms. Known for his modern takes on jazz, his improvisatory work as well as his newer forays into electro-acoustic music, Lehman is a “dazzling saxophonist,” (NYT) who works comfortably with orchestral pieces as he does with his own ensembles and collaborations with other forward thinkers on the scene. Some of his most notable partnerships have been with Vijay Iyer, Bennie Maupin, Jason Moran, Georgia-Anne Muldrow, George Lewis, Meshell Ndegeocello, and HPrizm of Antipop Consortium among others.
For this performance Lehman will be working with two highly talented musicians, bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Damion Reid. Look out for Lehman’s upcoming album—pieces of which will be featured in this concert.
