The Central District has been a musical, community hub for generations and where musical legends such as Ernestine Anderson, Ray Charles, and Quincy Jones, got their start. Today, the Jackson Street Jazz Walk celebrates those connections and carries forward the legacy and roots laid down by the African American jazz and blues tradition that continues to sustain the vibrant cultural heartbeat of Seattle.
In her fourth year organizing the walk, vocalist Eugenie Jones, the Jazz Walk’s Executive Producer, works hard to curate musical experiences for the benefit of African American heritage and youth. Bassist Reggie Workman calls Jones a “source of light,” and it’s true, this award-winning singer/songwriter, PR virtuoso, and financial genius gives generously to her community by leading up the Jackson Street Jazz Walk’s mission to “Commemorate and celebrate the Central District’s African American music legacy.” The Jazz Walk will feature 12 bands across seven stages in the Central District, including the Liberty Bank Building, Pratt Fine Arts Center Plaza, Cheeky Café, Wonder Bar and Restaurant, and Jackson Apartments.
This year’s lineup includes performances from Jones, Alex Dugdale Fade Quintet, Jovino Santos Neto Trio, E. Pruitt and Maureese Itson Quartet, Jennifer Mellish Quartet, Jeremy Shashkus Quartet featuring Nathan Breedlove, Kim Maguire Quartet, the Jean Chaumont Group, Trifecta, and Rik Wright’s Fundamental Forces.
If you’re looking for a reason to dress up, for $25 tickets, supporters can also attend the Black & White Gala on September 9, the evening before walk festivities kick off. The Jazz Walk is a “Music for a Cause” event, meaning admission is by donation. Last year, JSJW raised $3,000 for the senior center. This year, 100% of patron donations go to the NW Harvest Food Bank. Musicians are paid from the support of the Jazz Walk’s generous fiscal sponsors, including the Pratt Fine Arts Center, Earshot Jazz, Vulcan Real Estate, KNKX, Uncle Ike’s, Verity, Shunpike, and Eugenie Jones.
