Earshot Festival Resident Artist: Skerik

This year’s Festival Resident Artist is Skerik, a Seattle music legend. The saxophonist (and electronicist) tours the world with myriad big-name bands in many styles of music, and also stars at home. The list of his wildly varied touring and recording collaborations is miles long: Nels Cline, Roger Waters, Les Claypool, Syncopated Taint Septet, Master Musicians of Jajouka, Pearl Jam, Eyvind Kang, Bernie Worrell… Skerik has recorded on more than 200 records and been featured on films, TV programs, theatre, and dance. At home in Seattle, he owns a recording studio and works regularly as a session musician, horn arranger and soloist. As decades of music lovers locally and far afield can attest, he is a true original.

What’s Going On Festival: Conduction, Improvisation, and the Culture of Structure

Wayne Horvitz convenes a seven-concert series in tribute to iconic innovators Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris, Julius Hemphill, and Sun Ra. He has assembled heavy hitters from across North America including Brandon Ross (guitar), Vincent Chancey (French horn), Marty Ehrlich and Darius Jones (saxophones), Peggy Lee (cello), and Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon), alongside Seattle-based music stars including Skerik (saxophone), D’Vonne Lewis (drums), and Alex Guy (violin). A festival within a festival, What’s Going On — October 17, 23, 24, 25; and November 1, 2, 3 — is produced by the South Hudson Music Project, with co-producers Earshot Jazz, Seattle Modern Orchestra, and Nonsequitur; it is made possible by a generous grant from the Live Music Society. Each evening features two sets; ticketing is via Royal Room Bold Type Tickets. The Royal Room is all ages until 10pm.
