Bassist and composer Michael Bisio, is an intriguing artist whose work is highly creative and memorable. Local jazz writer Paul de Barros enthusiastically notes that Bisio’s “distinctive approach features an enormous sound, warm and woody; impeccable classical bowing technique; a soulful, moody feel for the blues and swing; and a bevy of extended techniques,” (Seattle Times). At home as a soloist or as part of an ensemble, Bisio has generated a prolific output of musical works. In particular, ten of them document his extraordinary association with modern piano icon Matthew Shipp. For this preformance with Earshot Jazz, Bisio will collaborate with vocalist, guitarist, and composer Timothy Hill. A pioneer in the art of harmonic singing, Hill is also respected for his talent in Tibetan chanting. Spanning many genres including folk, jazz, world music, contemporary classical and improvisation, Hill has collaborated with John Cage, Bill Frisell, Jeff Buckley, Allen Ginsberg, Odetta, Pete Seeger, Madan Gopal Singh, Pauline Oliveros, Iva Bittova, Brooklyn Raga Massive, and Brad Mehldau among others. In 2022 Bisio and Hill released their album Inside Voice/Outside Voice (Origin Records) which includes reinterpretations of jazz standards and avant classics as well as original compositions. “This album stands out even from a typical Bisio gem in various contexts, for it grabs a very testificatory revelling in tonal washes of unforgettable warmth and density,” writes Grego Applegate Edwards.
