Dmitri Matheny Quintet

Celebrated for his warm tone, soaring lyricism and masterful technique, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny (www.dmitrimatheny.com)  has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music).  First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s, Matheny has matured into “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players” (San Francisco Chronicle).  Dmitri began piano lessons at age 5, switched to the trumpet at age 9 and took up the flugelhorn at 18.  After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, he became the protégé of the legendary Art Farmer, a formative relationship that lasted over a decade.  The soulful sound of Dmitri’s horn garnered praise from critics and audiences alike, drawing comparisons to Miles Davis, Chet Baker and Art Farmer.  Upon Farmer’s passing in 1999, Matheny acquired his mentor’s copper-bell flugelhorn.  He has toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, totaling 21 countries, and has performed with countless Motown and popular music acts and jazz luminaries across the genre.  In addition, he has appeared on over 120 albums as a composer, arranger, producer, annotator or flugelhorn soloist, all while releasing 12 albums as a leader.  He has also compiled film scoring and soundtrack credits, and perhaps, most rewardingly, presented clinics, lectures, master classes and workshops at numerous universities and staged more than 500 free curriculum-based concerts for kids, introducing over 50000 school children to jazz.  Lastly, his extensive list of teaching, faculty and management positions as well as his volunteer contributions in many music industry organizations rival his renown efforts on the stage.  Appearing with Matheny at Marine View will be a who’s who of Northwest musicians with their own lengthy resumes:  Randy Halberstadt on piano, Phil Sparks on bass, Mark Ivester on drums and Michael Brockman on saxophone.
